Verse 1

Down beside the river blue, Nino found a leaf canoe. Pink flower, pebble round, Set them in, both safe and sound. Tiny push and splashy swish, Past a reed and past a fish. Left it tipped, then right it rolled. "Whoa, leaf boat! Please hold!"

Fold Nino's paper boat

Turn one sheet of paper into a floating boat with Nino and Stigo! Follow 10 simple folds together—smooth each crease with a finger and watch your boat take shape.

  1. A tall paper sheet with a coral top half, a blue bottom half, and a dashed line across the middle.
    Step 1

    Colour and mark the first fold

    Colour the top half coral and the bottom half blue. Draw a short dashed line across the middle so you can easily find the first fold.

    Check: Your tall sheet has two coloured halves and a clear line across its middle.

  2. The coral and blue paper folded in half into a wide rectangle, with a thin blue edge below it.
    Step 2

    Make the middle line

    Fold the rectangle in half from left to right like closing a card. Press the fold, then open it back up. Keep the first folded edge at the top.

    Check: A crease line runs straight down the middle to guide your next folds.

    Fold both top corners in

    Find the top closed corners. Fold the left and right corners down so they meet neatly along the middle crease, just like making a pointy house roof.

    Check: Your paper looks like a pointy triangle roof with two loose flaps along the bottom.

    Step 4

    Fold the front flap up

    Lift only the front loose bottom flap and fold it up against the triangle. Tuck the two little corner tips that stick out around the back edges of the triangle.

    Check: One bottom flap hugs the front of the triangle with its corner tips tucked away.

  5. A flat coral paper hat with a sky-blue folded band along the bottom.

    Turn over and fold the back flap

    Turn the whole shape over like a pancake. Fold the remaining loose bottom flap up, and tuck its corner tips neatly around the sides.

    Check: You made a flat paper hat! Peek underneath: it opens like a pocket at the bottom.

    Step 6

    Open the hat into a diamond

    Put your thumbs inside the bottom opening of the hat. Gently pull the sides apart, bring the left and right corners together, and press it flat into a diamond.

    Check: The hat has become a flat diamond with an opening at the bottom point.

  7. A flattened coral and blue paper diamond with an opening at its bottom point.
    Step 7

    Fold the front point up

    Keep the open point at the bottom. Lift only the front bottom point and fold it all the way up to meet the top point. Smooth the new bottom crease firmly.

    Check: The front bottom point now touches the top point, making a front triangle.

    Step 8

    Turn over and fold the other point

    Turn the shape over. Lift the remaining bottom point up to meet the top point, just as you did on the first side. Smooth the bottom crease.

    Check: You have a small, thick triangle with an opening in the bottom middle.

    Make a smaller diamond

    Put your thumbs inside the opening along the bottom of the triangle. Gently pull the sides apart, bring the side corners together, and flatten the shape.

    Check: You have a smaller diamond with two loose flaps pointing up at the top.

    Pull your boat open

    Hold one loose top flap in each hand. Slowly pull them apart and out to the sides to reveal the boat! Gently open the bottom and flatten the base so your boat can stand.

    Check: Your paper boat is complete, steady, and ready to decorate or float.
